Lambada is the precursor to Brazilian Zouk. Lambada emerged in Brazil in the 1980s and featured fast, swinging hip movements. Brazilian Zouk evolved from Lambada, becoming slower, more sensual, and more improvisational, with an emphasis on upper-body waves, head movement, and partner connection.
The global Zouk calendar is packed with world-class events: Brazilian Zouk congresses in the US, Europe and Brazil, Zouk weekenders across Australia and Asia, and international Lambada & Zouk festivals attract thousands of dancers every year. Cult of Zouk lists them all.
The best way to learn Brazilian Zouk is to find a local weekly class taught by a certified instructor, attend social dances (practicas and socials), and travel to zouk festivals to immerse yourself in the community. Use The Scene directory on Cult of Zouk to find classes near you.
SBZK+ (also written Soulful Brazilian Zouk+) is a modern evolution of Brazilian Zouk that incorporates additional influences including contemporary, neo-soul, and R&B. It is gaining popularity across North America and Europe.
